WWII and the Homefront Remembered
North Gallery
The effects of World War II remain in our psyche to this day. Come and see how the “Greatest Generation” saved freedom in America and abroad. Featured is the GI Theatre, where a short documentary featuring local veterans is shown continuously. Children are hands-on participants in the exhibit. There are military jackets and helmets to try on, patriotic posters to draw and display, and a special module that teaches about the medals received by Americans during and after World War II. This exhibit was recently recognized by the Georgia Historical Society as the 2003 Outstanding Exhibit of the Year.
Thronateeska Heritage Center would like to thank Miller Brewing Company for their sponsorship of World War II and The Homefront Remembered.
Horace King
Bridges To The Past
South Gallery
This new exhibit opened for the public in February 2004. It highlights the life and achievements of Horace King, and tells the story of how, after being born into slavery in the early 1800s, he grew to become the most famous covered bridge builder in America. The first bridge spanning the Flint River in Albany, as well as the Bridge House, were designed and constructed by Mr. King. Horace King was not only a master bridge builder, he was also an architect, engineer, designer, politician, and so much more. We encourage everyone to come and learn the story of one of the most gifted and interesting figures in Albany’s history.
